Hammurabi (c. 1810 BC-c. 1750 BC) was the sixth king of the First Babylonian Dynasty. The Code of Hammurabi contains 282 laws and was written in Akkadian. It prescribed specific penalties for every crime and is among the earliest codes to establish the presumption of innocence. The code also dealt with the economic life of ancient Babylonians, like the duties and rights of tenant farmers.

A Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies is an account written in 1542 by the Spanish Dominican friar Bartolomé de las Casas (1484-1566). He chronicles the first decades of the colonization of the West Indies, exposing the atrocities committed against the indigenous people. Dedicated to Prince Philip II of Spain to alert him of these atrocities, the work reveals mass slaughter, torture and slavery, showing that the evangelizing vision of Columbus had descended into genocide.

A Pluralistic Universe by the philosopher and psychologist William James (1842-1910) is based on a series of lectures held at Oxford University in 1908. James is mainly concerned with the nature of relations, stating the possibility of external relations which were excluded from monistic idealism. James maintains that we are guided by beliefs that we attempt to justify in order to keep our beliefs going.

First published in 1981, The New Nation is an inspiring and beautifully crafted piece of writing that is at one political and emotionally driven. Bellamy writes of the sheer necessity to build a new nation or remodel the old one in a completely new way for the benefit of the people.

The British advocate for women’s rights Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928), was the founder of the Women's Social and Political Union. In this 1913 speech in the US, Pankhurst expresses her thoughts about attaining women’s suffrage. Her main point is that a militant element was necessary to persuade the British Parliament to act.

Eduard Bernstein was a social-democratic politician and Marxist theorist. He had a deep knowledge of all of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’ work, but was also willing to criticize certain aspects of their political theories and generate counter theories and solutions. In What Marx Really Taught, a short letter penned by Bernstein in 1897, he discusses indeed how valuable Engels was in terms of the creation of the Marxist idea, but also discussed mistakes made by both he and Marx, in their later publications.

The autobiography of Ma-Ka-Tai-Me-She-Kia-Kiak (Black Hawk’s birth name), first published in 1833, is the autobiography of the Native American Sauk leader Black Hawk. During his time in custody following clashes with European-American settlers on ceded tribal land, Black Hawk told his story to an interpreter and journalist.
