"The Middle Toe of the Right Foot", a ghost story by the writer and Civil War soldier Ambrose Bierce, was first published in The San Francisco Examiner in 1890. A man named Manton had murdered his children, and his wife who lacked the middle toe of her right foot. A decade later, he returns to the area; and having been recognized, is provoked to a duel in the dark, to be held at the scene of the crime. When the time of the duel comes, no antagonist appears, and Manton stands alone in the haunted darkness. The next day, they found his corpse, throttled by terror, crouching in a corner.

During the Civil War, a Southern civilian is about to be hanged for attempting to sabotage a railway bridge. When the execution is about to take place from the bridge, the rope breaks and he begins his escape toward home.... or does he?

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce was born on 24th June 1842 at Horse Cave Creek in Meigs County, Ohio. Bierce was an infantry officer in the Civil War and witnessed the deaths of many and no doubt contemplated his own; thus the fatalistic basis of much of his writing.

A friend of the narrator, a very brave but sometimes reckless lieutenant, is killed in action. The narrator becomes the possessor of a letter that he returns to the sender after the war is over. He finds the sender of the letter to be a very beautiful, sophisticated, but self-centered woman. So self-centered one wonders if she understands the meaning of the narrator's last words to her.
