As the ’70s draw to a close in San Francisco, things do not bode well for the city—or for ex-con PI Colleen Hayes, whose daughter Pam, in a tragic turn of events, has lost her baby. Pam leaves San Francisco, and Colleen, who moved there to reunite with her, starts to wonder what she’s doing in the Bay Area. Meanwhile, a serial killer given the name “Night Candy” is targeting sex workers, both male and female. The situation doesn’t improve when Colleen’s friend and ally—SFPD Inspector Owens—is arrested for the murder of his ex-wife, who was found burned in a fire.

Blandford Candy, rake and spy, returns to London to find a brutal murderer at large. He is ordered to find the killer by Parliament’s Scoutmaster General. Our reluctant hero uncovers a web of deceit in the highest corridors of power, and searches for evidence that could condemn the richest men in England to death. He comes to the attention of upcoming general, Oliver Cromwell, as his investigation takes him to the bloody battlefield of Marston Moor. But only one man can help: Sir John Hurry. Blandford Candy is sent to London, after an illicit affair, and joins the Roundhead army to fight against the King, taking part in the Battle of Edgehill. A reluctant hero if ever there was one, he becomes a spy for the cause - and, through luck or judgement, uncovers more than one Royalist plot. His love of wine and the fairer sex prove both a curse and a blessing for the agent. Blandford soon earns the enmity of the King’s spy mistress Jane Whorwood, and patronage of the great parliamentarian leader John Hampden.
