A small everyday ritual left the last digital trace of a missing commuter: a transit pass tapped a luggage hook in car four at 5:26 PM on July 13, 2009. Her green tote was found hung on a fence four miles south of the station the next morning, holding a cold sealed sandwich, a fully charged phone, and a pass valid through the end of the month-so why was no one seen leaving the train?
In this episode, we lay out the timeline, the physical evidence, and the contradictions that made this case unprecedented in Harmon County. Listen for the sequence of records and scene details that force a single, unsettling question: how do three impossible facts line up to tell one answer?
Person: Kelly Dempsey
Date: July 13, 2009
Location: Ventry Platform / Dunnfield Station / fence four miles south of Dunnfield
Status: Missing
Event: Transit pass tapped luggage hook in car four at 5:26 PM
- Transit records show 61 passengers boarded at Ventry at 5:22 PM; 48 exited at Dunnfield and 13 were accounted for at Colver Junction.
- Kelly’s transit pass last registered at 5:19 PM at Ventry and then again at 5:26 PM unlocking a fold-down luggage hook in car four near the rear service door.
- County surveyor John Callahan spotted the green canvas tote on a livestock fence wire roughly eleven feet from the rail line on the morning of July 14 and did not touch it.
- The bag contained a sealed deli sandwich still cold to the touch, a fully charged cell phone with a cracked screen, and a transit pass valid through the end of the month.
- Forensic analysis found a compression mark on the strap consistent with a short-duration hang and undisturbed scrub oak and thistle on the road-side approach, indicating the bag was placed from the rail side.
