We typically experience public art at the end of the creative process: walking past a completed mural or stepping into an installation without thinking much about the months—or years—of planning, collaboration, and problem-solving that made it possible. But while the backstory shouldn’t dictate how we interpret a work of art, it can change how we appreciate everything that had to happen before it existed at all.
This episode draws on recent interviews from KWBU’s Conversations with Creative Waco to explore two very different collaborative art projects: the Bridges & Brazos pavement mural in downtown Waco and the fiber-and-data installation Belonging. Along the way, a simple question—“How did this happen?”—becomes a different way of thinking about not just collaborative art but all the invisible work that makes it possible.
