“Black,” “African American,” “Moorish American” are not just words. They’re filters that decide what history you claim, what institutions you build, and how you understand power in the United States. We’re joined by Moriel Smith for a deep, fast-moving breakdown of Moorish American nationality through the Moorish Science Temple of America, Noble Drew Ali’s framing, and the idea that “Moor” functions less like a race and more like a civilizational identity.

We dig into why Morocco and the Moroccan Empire can’t be reduced to a single look or a single lineage, and how the Trans-Saharan trade connected Northwest Africa to the Sahel and West Africa through gold, scholarship, intermarriage, and governance. Mauryell explains why that network matters for people commonly called African American today, especially when DNA results point to multiple regions like Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Ghana, Guinea, and Congo.
