Why are more women staying single, marrying later, and postponing—or rejecting—motherhood? The statistics reveal a wholesale renegotiation of women’s lives. In 1975, the median American woman first married at 21.1. In 2025, she married at 28.4. Among women born between 1940 and 1944, nearly 80% were married by age 25. Among women born between 1990 and 1994, only 30% were. This isn’t a demographic footnote. It’s what happens when women finally have authority over the two forces that historically controlled our choices: reproduction and money. For generations, women exchanged fertility, sexuality, domestic labor, emotional labor, and devotion for the financial provision and social protection they were largely prevented from securing for themselves. Now women can earn money, hold credit, build businesses, control pregnancy, and survive outside marriage. We no longer need men in the way women historically needed them—and that means money alone is no longer enough to secure a woman’s loyalty. We want partnership. Emotional safety. Presence. Character. Trust. Support. Cherishing. Women aren’t destroying marriage. We’re requiring marriage to become worthy of women. In Episode 67 of The Satisfied Woman Podcast, I examine: Why women are marrying approximately seven years laterWhy fewer women are marrying or having childrenHow financial independence changed heterosexual relationshipsThe historical bargain women are no longer willing to acceptWhy modern men must offer more than a paycheckHow money gives women the power to choose relationships freelyThe Four Keys women need: safety, security, trust, and cherishingWhy today’s women have a responsibility to exercise their newfound power, choice, and agency If you still feel trapped, compromised, or unable to build your life on your own terms, book a call with me: https://www.thesatisfiedwoman.com/coaching-book-call Explore my work and get The Way of the Satisfied Woman: https://www.thesatisfiedwoman.com Research referenced in this episode: U.S. Census Bureau: Median age at first marriage https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2025/families-and-living-arrangements.html U.S. Census Bureau: Marriage by age and birth cohort https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2022/08/does-marrying-younger-mean-marrying-more-often.html Pew Research Center: Record share of 40-year-olds never married https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/06/28/a-record-high-share-of-40-year-olds-in-the-us-have-never-been-married/ CDC: Provisional U.S. birth and fertility data for 2025 https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/vsrr/vsrr043.pdf This is Part One of a two-part series.
