I'm truly grateful to have you with me once again.
We live in a world that never slows down. Our phones are constantly buzzing, news stories arrive one after another, social media continuously presents new reasons to compare ourselves with others, and even when our bodies are resting on the couch or lying comfortably in bed, our minds keep racing.
Perhaps you've experienced this yourself.
After a long day, you turn off the lights, close your eyes, and get ready to sleep. But at that exact moment, your mind decides it's just getting started.
It begins replaying the conversations you had today...
It brings back memories of past mistakes...
It creates endless scenarios about tomorrow...
And it worries about things that may never happen at all.
In moments like these, we often ask ourselves:
"Why won't my mind be quiet?"
"Why can't I simply rest?"
"Why does the harder I try to relax, the more anxious I become?"
If this feels familiar, there's one important thing I want you to know before we go any further.
There is nothing wrong with you.
Your mind is not broken.
You are not weak.
In fact, your brain is doing exactly what millions of years of evolution designed it to do: keeping you alive.
The problem is that the same brain that once protected our ancestors from wild predators now activates the very same alarm system in response to work emails, university exams, family conflicts, financial worries, and even the number of likes on social media.
As a result, our bodies can react to a simple phone notification in much the same way they once reacted to seeing a dangerous predator.
And this is where stress enters our lives.
Before we continue, though, let's clear up one common misconception.
Most people think of stress as the enemy.
Something that should disappear as quickly as possible.
Modern psychology, however, tells a different story.
Stress is, first and foremost, a natural response.
Without stress, human beings probably would never have been motivated to escape danger, protect their children, study for important exams, or strive toward meaningful goals.
In fact, a healthy amount of stress isn't harmful at all. It's actually essential for optimal brain performance.
So the real question isn't:
"How do we get rid of stress?"
A better question is:
"Why does stress sometimes stop being our helper and become our commander?"
"Why does it sometimes feel as though our minds are no longer under our control?"
To answer that question, we need to take a brief journey inside the brain.
Deep within the brain lies a small structure called the amygdala.
You can think of the amygdala as your brain's security guard.
Its job is to constantly scan your surroundings for signs of danger. The moment it detects even the slightest threat, it sounds the alarm in a fraction of a second.
When that happens, the sympathetic nervous system is activated.
Your adrenal glands release adrenaline, followed by cortisol.
Your heart begins to beat faster.
Your breathing becomes quicker.
Your blood pressure rises.
Your muscles prepare for action.
More blood flows to your arms and legs.
At the same time, the parts of your brain responsible for careful reasoning and logical thinking temporarily become less active.
Why?
Because when you're facing real danger, your brain doesn't have time to sit down and analyze every possibility.
It has to make an immediate decision:
Fight.
Run.
Or freeze.
This is what's known as the fight, flight, or freeze response.
The challenge is that your brain doesn't always distinguish clearly between a hungry lion and a frightening thought.
