In this meditation, we look at Solomon’s great prayer at the dedication of the temple, found in 1 Kings 8 and 2 Chronicles 6.

Solomon begins before the altar, standing before all Israel with his hands spread toward heaven. But 2 Chronicles gives us a deeper view: the king kneels before the congregation. He stands as king, but kneels as servant. He leads publicly, but he bows dependently before God.

This prayer teaches us that true leadership does not merely command others; it shows others how to humble themselves before the Lord.

Solomon’s prayer also gives solemn warnings. He speaks of sin between neighbors, defeat before enemies, heaven shut up, famine, pestilence, the plague of the heart, the stranger from a far country, war, and even captivity. Yet through it all, the repeated cry is: “Hear thou in heaven… and forgive.”

At the end of the scene, fire comes down from heaven, the glory of the Lord fills the house, and the people bow with their faces to the ground, saying:

“For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.”

This meditation considers leadership, humility, repentance, mercy, and the glory of God among His people.
