Why am I doing this? We have never had greater access to music than we do now, and it can feel overwhelming. There is so much that it’s difficult to know where to begin, and so we often fall into what we know, what we already love, and then so many other great bands out there hustling get lost in the shuffle. Since starting this, I have been curating bands on Instagram that are trying to get listeners, and I want to explore them further. So once a week, I sit down and go through an entire album of a band I have never listened to and write my honest feelings about it. This isn’t a music critique newsletter; I am not a musician and couldn’t tell you the time scale if you put a gun to my head, but instead what I feel the message is or how it moved me. Music is an art form that I worry is being treated more and more as a disposable playlist item. Ever since iTunes, we have moved from albums to singles and are more focused on vibe than artist. Now with short form videos songs are being reduced from singles to clips. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but I am straddling both sides where I grew up listening to whole albums and now gravitate towards playlists. For myself, I want to explore complete albums more, and so this is a musical exploration newsletter. I am publicizing it because I am hoping others want to join me on this journey. Let’s find new bands, new genres, and explore music from all over together. One band at a time, we will together enjoy the art form and appreciate the effort it takes to play, record, and put out an album to an increasingly critical mass.
