Parshat Matos: Reuven and Gad trade the Land for grazing pasture. Three gifts, six who grabbed them, all destroyed. The shiur reads the pattern.
Reuven and Gad have accumulated vast herds and ask Moses to stay on the Transjordan side rather than cross into the Land. The Torah frames the request in the language of livestock. The wealth chose first.
The Sages name three gifts God places in the world: wisdom, strength, and wealth. Received, they hold. Grabbed, they cease. Achitophel and Bilaam, the two wisest men who ever lived. Shimshon and Goliath, the two strongest. Korach and Haman, the two wealthiest. Each was destroyed from the world. Reuven and Gad were the first tribes Sancheriv exiled. Their grazing land took them out.
The shiur closes on the Chofetz Chaim. A student married into wealth, invested the dowry, and lost everything within a year. The Chofetz Chaim smiled. Losing the money after one year kept his Torah intact. Losing it after twenty would have taken him with it. What God took back was the only gift he kept.
