In this episode of The Blend, Host Sonal Choudhary, MD, Director of the Integrative Dermatology and Skincare Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA, and Steven Daveluy, MD, Professor of Dermatology and Residency Program Director at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI, discuss inclusive care for LGBTQ-plus patients. Dr. Daveluy offers tips on how to build trust and engage these patients, including:
Mirroring the patient’s terms. If they use the term husband, follow suit, he says.
Hanging signs in your lobby and around the office to clearly communicate this is a safe space, such as a pink triangle or a rainbow.
Meeting transgender patients where they are. “Have that open conversation about their treatment goals and what they're trying to accomplish [as] that can be really helpful in making sure that you're heading in the right direction,” he says.
