In this episode of The Gray Area, I sit down with Ron Skeete, Vice President of Business Development at SkillsRight, for a conversation about growing up in Crown Heights and Brownsville, Brooklyn, surviving what he calls a “war zone” environment, and the twist of fate that got him into Stuyvesant High School and eventually Stony Brook University. Ron shares how a corporate job search that felt disrespectful led him to a small Brooklyn nonprofit instead — and how that pivot became what he calls “finding my ministry.”
We also dig into the harder lessons: losing a role he’d worked hard for, and what he calls the “LeBron theory” — the idea that we are the talent, not our job title, and that no company owes us our identity. Ron walks through two decades of leadership across Boys and Girls Clubs of America and now SkillsRight, where he’s helping close the economic opportunity gap for workers without traditional four-year degrees. His story is a reminder that titles come and go, but the talent, the mission, and the value we create are ours to carry forward.
