In March 1859, workers at Kilometer 147 on the Banat railway begin wasting away with identical wounds on their necks. The vampire beneath the unfinished line is not a supernatural aristocrat, but a waterlogged human corpse preserved in flooded clay and drawn toward the living by heat and vibration.
In a recovered confession, railway chief Lazar Kovács describes opening epidemic graves beneath the embankment and attempting an old Salus Omnium containment procedure. But minutes before the quarantine is supposed to hold, a previously symptom-free worker develops a fresh wound—and Kovács realizes he can no longer determine which of his men are still human before the railway opens in June.
