It all started with "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot", a heist comedy.Thunderbolt (Clint Eastwood) has been lying low as a preacher after a heist went wrong. His past catches up to him and as he's fleeing bullets in a wheat field, when Lightfoot saves him and the two hit the road and try to stay one step ahead of Red (George Kennedy) and Eddie (Jeffrey Lewis). A Hollywood stunt man works nights as a getaway driver for criminals. One day, he falls in love with his neighbor and his life begins to fall apart.Nicolas Winding Refn brought a detached sense of cool to this 2011 masterpiece. Does "Drive" still hold up today? Is Albert Brooks still terrifying? Is the elevator head stomp still a grand, romantic moment? How dated is the electro indie pop score? • The Counselor (2013)
    2026/08/01

Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" came out in 2013 and the reviews were not kind. With a screenplay by Cormac McCarthy (not too long after his novel for "No Country For Old Men" became an Oscar winning Coen Brothers film), the bleak drug trade morality tale became a punchline from Cameron Diaz's car humping scene and a perceived sense of boredom. Is this movie the steaming pile of crap everyone claimed? Probably, but i wouldn't know, because I watched the directors cut and it's a straight up masterpiece. For whatever reason, Scott released the shorter version, and everyone missed out on the building dread, the thoughtful pauses and the doom oozing from every surface. This movie is very, very good. Everyone in it (except maybe Diaz) is firing on all cylinders and I couldn't possibly recommend this more.Buckle up, y'all. It's time for a visit from...THE COUNSELOR

  • The Low Life (1995)
    2026/07/24

John (Rory Cochrane) came to Hollywood to live out that Bukowski life and grind away at being a writer. He's spent years working garbage temp jobs, renting an actual house (a luxury in 2026!), and apparently only writing to his uncle instead of working on novels, shorts, poems or screenplays. But, at least John has some equally scummy friends (Ron Livingston and Christian Meoli), a potential (and equally vapid) love interest in Kyra Sedgewick, a new job working for a slumlord (James Le Gros) and a new roommate from the midwest (Sean Astin). Is his life going to turn around? Will he complete a novel and fall in love? Will he treat his enthusiastic and dorky new roomie with respect and appreciate all the things he does for him? Will irate people throw bottles at him or will dudes make weird passes at him when he's really bummed out? Marvel at how young Rory Cochrane is. Check out Renee Zellweger in a blink and you'll miss it role and ponder how differently her career would have been without Jerry Maguire. We've also got Shawnee Smith as "little tramp girl", and JT Walsh in a George Hickenlooper film (a guy who almost made it big with "Sling Blade"). Tune in and find out if this is a lost gem from the mid 90's.#rorycochrane #reneezellweger #kyrasedgewick #ronlivingston #seanastin #90s #indiefilm #podcast #moviereview

Four friends go to the big city in a fancy winnebago to see a boxing match. When traffic backs up, they take a detour to trouble and end up running for their lives. Will they survive being hunted by a street gang? Despite a popular soundtrack, some rising stars and a solid premise, this movie was dead on arrival in theaters. Emilio Estevez was losing steam as a star and the studio lost confidence in the film. Is it a secret banger? Is Denis Leary believable as a gangster out for blood? How big is this scary industrial and gang ridden zone they're trapped in? Find out in this very episode! If you like this, check out the episodes covering "Enemy Territory" (featuring a young Tony Todd) or "The Park Is Mine". Well, the answer is investigate and uncover some wild toxic waste dumping. This was a TV movie that was supposed to bring us a TV series.
