Ways to ask for help from a mentor on finding a job?
Are you struggling to find a great job that matches your skillset? You’re constantly getting negative replies and you don’t know how to improve in order to access that dream job you always wanted? Then you are not alone, a lot of people are dealing with this struggle every day, and it’s very important to solve the issues as quickly as possible. Finding a mentor can help solve all these problems, not to mention you will get the assistance and support you need to enhance your career and take it to the next level. But how can you ask your mentor for advice? Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind!
1. Understand the way your mentor thinks
You don’t want to rush your mentor into helping you. While you can reach out for help, that doesn’t mean you will have immediate results. Instead, you want to learn how your mentor thinks and understand his behavior. Then you must work towards building a great relationship with your mentor in the long term. Focus on that before you ask anything from him, especially things like finding a job.
2. Find the right time to ask your questions
It’s important to leave your ego aside and ensure that you find the right time to contact your mentor. As you can imagine, most mentors are very busy, so you need to reach out first and wait for a reply. Ask if the mentor some time to meet with you regarding some important questions you may have. Let them choose when to do so, don’t impose a certain time by yourself.
3. Articulate a specific, succinct question
In your case, you want to ask whether the mentor knows about any job opportunities at this time. Talk about the current job opportunities you have, their requirements and the fact that you are undecided. It’s also important to talk about the businesses you have in mind, while also asking the mentor for advice and even suggestions, if the mentor knows any businesses that are in need of your talents.
4. What skills should you improve in order to acquire that much-wanted job?
It’s important to know exactly what type of job you are targeting. Let your mentor know about it, and they might offer you some insights into what skills you need to improve/gain at this time. You can talk about how you can take risks, what skills you need in order to move ahead, how to negotiate better and anything else that might be relevant for a potential interview.
5. Keep it a casual conversation and don’t pressure your mentor
Remember, the mentor is here to assist you. However, they shouldn’t be forced to offer you assistance and advice. What you need is to ask nicely, once you established a great mentor-mentee relationship. This means you need to wait for some time and not expect immediate assistance.
Work towards a great mentor-mentee relationship and always focus on nurturing it as much as possible. You should ask your mentor for advice after knowing you and your skillsets very well. The mentor might be able to connect you with industry professionals, or at least offer you some guidance on what skills you need and how to improve. Regardless, working with a mentor is extremely valuable if you want to enhance your career and take it to new heights. That’s why I recommend you find a good mentor and forge a great relationship with him or her. It will help your career more than you imagine!
