In this episode, I share an interview with the late Melvin Williams (1941–2015). Known as “Little Melvin,” was a Baltimore figure whose life spanned the extremes of power, downfall, and reinvention. Rising to prominence in the 1960s and ’70s through the city’s heroin trade, he became both a feared and legendary name on the streets, eventually serving long prison sentences that brought him into sharp conflict with law enforcement and the courts. In later years, Williams embraced martial arts, spirituality, and community work, even appearing as The Deacon on HBO’s The Wire, a series partly inspired by his story. Neither defined solely by crime nor redemption, Williams remains a complex symbol of Baltimore’s struggles and resilience.
