A woman moves through Eugène Atget's photograph and becomes a blur.
Everything around her remains sharp: the building, the street lamp, the posters, the cobblestones. Yet the passerby seems to dissolve into the street itself.

In this episode of Photography and Walking, we spend time with Cabaret, Rue Mouffetard, a photograph made in Paris around 1899–1900. Through Atget's patient observation of an ordinary street corner, we explore attention, memory, urban space, and the relationship between walking and photography.

The episode reflects on the street corner as a place of encounter and possibility, considers Walter Benjamin's famous reading of Atget's work, and asks what happens when a photographer devotes sustained attention to the everyday world.
More than a century after the photograph was made, the people who once moved through this corner have vanished. Yet traces remain.

Dans cet épisode, nous regardons Cabaret, Rue Mouffetard, une photographie réalisée par Eugène Atget à Paris vers 1899–1900.

À première vue, l'image semble presque banale : un coin de rue, un bâtiment, quelques passants, une lampe, des affiches collées au mur. Pourtant, plus on demeure avec elle, plus cette photographie commence à révéler sa richesse.

À travers le regard patient d'Atget, l'épisode explore les liens entre la marche, la photographie, la mémoire et l'espace urbain. Il réfléchit le coin de rue comme lieu de rencontre et de possibilité, à l'attention portée aux détails du quotidien, ainsi qu'à la silhouette floue qui traverse l'image et introduit discrètement le temps dans la photo.

En pensant notamment à Walter Benjamin et Edward Soja, l'épisode s'intéresse à la manière dont les photographies conservent bien davantage que des lieux physiques. Elles accumulent aussi des traces de conversations, d'habitudes, de déplacements et de vies aujourd'hui disparues.
Ce qui demeure n'est pas un monument, mais un coin de rue observé avec suffisamment d'attention pour révéler toute la richesse de l'ordinaire.
