Episode 3: The Angels of Mons
70,000 British troops meet 160,000 Germans at a canal in Belgium, hold the line with rifle fire so fast the Germans thought it was machine guns, then get flanked and forced into a retreat that pushes men past the edge of what a human body's meant to endure.
That's the setup. What happens next is where this one gets strange.
Exhausted, starving, hallucinating soldiers start seeing things on the retreat from Mons — angels, St. George on horseback, ghostly bowmen from a battle fought on that same ground 500 years earlier, firing arrows into the German lines. Whether it was divine intervention, mass hallucination from men pushed to breaking point, or deliberate propaganda dressed up as a miracle — that's the question this episode sits with.
We cover the actual battle first — why Britain was in this war at all, the Schlieffen Plan, the Rape of Belgium, and how a heavily outnumbered BEF punched miles above its weight before the Great Retreat began. Then we get into the myth that's outlasted most of the men who lived it.
