Gus Hamer, Sheffield United's best player, is almost certainly leaving Bramall Lane. The expected destination is Frank Lampard's Coventry City, newly promoted to the Premier League. But few, if any Blades fans, would begrudge him wanting to step up again having spent three years at the club, the latter two in the Championship. As irony would have it, Hamer left the Sky Blues after they had just lost in the Championship play-off final at Wembley against Luton Town, promotion decided with a penalty shootout. He then headed to the Blades who had just been promoted to the top tier automatically. Into the final year of his 48-month contract after signing in a £15million move, the Blades are open to offers at the right price rather than see him become a free agent at the end of the coming season. Some argue that offering to extend his contract with improved terms, would be a better option, given that a suitable replacement is likely to be financially out of reach. But Hamer, now 29-years-old, is likely to want another crack at the Premier League while the opportunity is instantly available.If ever there was a player who has worn the red and white stripes of Sheffield United and whose commitment is beyond reproach, it is Gus Hamer.So it was a little disingenuous of reports this week that manager Chris Wilder deemed it necessary to publicly tell the 29-year-old that he expects his full commitment amid continuing transfer speculation. That is not quite how the manager phrased it.Hamer is likely to be a Coventry City player once more before the summer transfer window closes on September 1. Few, if any Blades would begrudge him his day in the sun back in the Premier League after three seasons of dedicated service at Bramall Lane. He is one of those players who, after leaving, is guaranteed a standing ovation the next time he returns to Bramall Lane.Since former boss Paul Heckingbottom signed Hamer on a four-year contract in a £15million move from Coventry in 2023, talk of other clubs’ interest has been almost a constant, such is the quality he has shown. Throughout, Hamer has been an exemplary professional and endeavoured to give his all for the Blades.In his second season, Leeds United were actively chasing with a bid as the summer window was about to close. An offer dismissed as “miles off” on the eve of when he played in a League Cup defeat at Barnsley. Many fans believed that was the last occasion he would be seen in a Blades shirt. Other clubs were reported to be interested as well. Wilder said of Hamer’s attitude at the time: “The way he’s handled it is perfect.”Voted Championship Player of the Year in 2025, most Unitedites expected him to leave last summer. True, by his high standard, form dipped in the season just gone. But it is a measure of the man that he remained the team’s most influential contributor.The Brazilian-born Dutchman, United’s top performer in three turbulent years and four managerial changes at the Lane, is clearly too good for the Championship. The excitement of a first taste of the top tier, in Heckingbottom’s newly promoted side, was tempered due to his new club being woefully unprepared, which was no fault of the manager’s. Result? United chased shadows and were outclassed from start to finish. Hamer, though, was a beacon in the gloom.Despite that experience, it still whetted the appetite. Now, in the final year of his deal at the Lane, United are open to offers at the right price, rather than let him leave for nothing at the end of the season.Hamer, then, has a golden opportunity to return to newly promoted Coventry, where, as at United, he is adored by supporters. Quickly establishing himself as a firm favourite in his three seasons with them, he was a driving midfield force and supplied 11 goals on the way to the Championship play-off final at Wembley. A heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Luton Town before leaving for the Lane.Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues might be expected to struggle, but unlike with United, Hamer can at least expect them to make a fight of it. Offering a platform to try to establish himself as a top-tier player once again.The midfield creator and driving force, scored seven goals in all competitions for the Blades last season. He was the top Championship player with 12 assists. And that in what is widely regarded as not nearly his best campaign.Right-back Femi Seriki is also attracting transfer interest from abroad. Wilder said after the final pre-season friendly, a goalless draw against Bundesliga Two side Bochum: “They're contracted to Sheffield United and I expect 100 per cent commitment. To give everything for the shirt.“We're paying the wages. I’ve always said it’s up to them. If they take care of the football, then football will take care of them.
