On one warm August night in 1661, the richest man in France threw the most dazzling party his country had ever seen — and by dawn he had ruined himself.

His name was Nicolas Fouquet, superintendent of finances to the young Louis XIV, and his new château at Vaux-le-Vicomte was the most beautiful house in France. To build it he gathered three unknowns — the architect Louis Le Vau, the painter Charles Le Brun, and the garden designer André Le Nôtre — and together they invented a whole new style. Its gardens hid an optical illusion tuned to a single royal eye; its central dome was crowned for a sun that was never painted. Fouquet built all of it to win his king's love. Instead, the splendour terrified Louis XIV — and within three weeks the king had him arrested, tried, and shut away for life. Then he took Fouquet's three artists and turned them loose on a far larger canvas: the Palace of Versailles.

This is the story of the masterpiece that ruined its maker — and became the blueprint for the greatest palace on earth.
