The Vastaamo psychotherapy data breach became one of Finland’s most damaging cyber extortion cases. A private mental health provider held records that could include highly personal details from therapy sessions, diagnoses, treatment history, identity numbers, and contact information. The breach began years before the public knew. In autumn 2020, a person using the name Ransom Man demanded bitcoin from Vastaamo, leaked patient files online, and then sent ransom demands directly to therapy patients, threatening to publish private records unless they paid. Finnish authorities investigated aggravated data breach, extortion, and related offenses. Julius Kivimäki, also known as Aleksanteri Kivimäki, denied wrongdoing during the case, but was later convicted in Finland and sentenced to prison. Vastaamo collapsed after the breach, and regulators found serious data protection failures. This episode follows how the breach happened, how the extortion campaign targeted patients one by one, and why the case remains a warning about the real-world harm caused when sensitive health records are treated as ordinary business data. This podcast uses artificial intelligence in its research, writing, production, and narration. Episodes are editorially reviewed before publication. #TheScamFiles #CyberExtortionAndConsumerHarm #Vastaamo #JuliusKivimKi #RansomMan
