A single dry pink size-four sneaker, double-knotted and wedged between a concrete ledge and coastal rushes, survived two full tides while everything else was soaked and silt-crusted - and it was found on the morning after the Peregrine Cross capsized. What could explain a dry shoe amid ruined, waterlogged debris, and whose absence did it silently confirm?
In this episode, we tell the sequence of events from boarding to capsize and the immediate search that followed, following the people who noticed the sneaker and the mother who dove back under the hull. How did that dry shoe become a focal clue in a search for a seven-year-old child?
Person: Ralph Hall
Date: Tuesday, May 17, 2011
Event: Peregrine Cross capsize
Location: Beaumont Harbor wetlands
Survivors: 21 pulled from the water
- The sneaker recovered was a pink size-four, double-knotted, found wedged between a concrete ledge and coastal rushes on the morning of May 17, 2011.
- Two full tides had come and gone since the Peregrine Cross capsized, yet the sneaker remained dry while surrounding objects were soaked and silt-crusted.
- Ralph Hall, with 19 years surveying the Beaumont Harbor wetlands, discovered the sneaker at 6:40 AM and did not touch it.
- The Peregrine Cross departed at 9:15 AM with 41 passengers and 3 crew; a storm front arrived at 11:05 AM, 40 minutes earlier than forecast models predicted.
- The vessel rolled past its recovery threshold and inverted in a sequence lasting 90 seconds, resulting in 21 survivors rescued and 12 passengers still missing.
