  • 3 Reasons Behind Market Volatility in 2022
    2022/05/24

When we sat down to record this episode at the end of April, we'd already seen our fair share of market volatility in 2022.  Today, Larry Friis and Jon "JAG" Gay break down 3 of the biggest contributing factors to this market volatility.

    • The Russian Invasion of Ukraine
    • Rising Interest Rates
    • Global Supply Chain issues

While many of us have taken a financial hit because of some combination of these factors, there are instruments that can be used to mitigate your downside risk. We close the show by discussing those.

  • Retirement Mistakes Most Of Us Are Making
    2022/04/29

In our first episode, Larry Friis of Rogers Financial sits down with Jon "JAG" Gay to look at some of the costly mistakes that many Americans are making when it comes to planning their retirements.

Too often, we apply a "set it and forget it" approach, relying on whatever age-targeted fund comes in our workplace retirement plan.  The problem is, these funds are mass marketed and not tailored to your individual goals and situation. There's no intention.

Most folks approach retirement backwards.  They save, save, save, then hope their money will last throughout their retirement. Instead, we should be calculating what we need in retirement, then crunching the numbers on how to get there. Income from social security is not going to be enough to make ends meet.

The earlier you can start thinking about retirement, the better.  The power of compound interest can be astonishing.

Many of the same vehicles that wealthy individuals use to protect their assets are available to the general public.  You just need to formulate a plan.  And the first step is sitting down with someone.   Larry is actually sharing his cell phone number with listeners.  You can reach him at 801-885-0748.

Larry Friis's desire to do a podcast comes out of a passion for him. He's been a banker for more than 25 years. And he's been an adjunct professor for more than 18 years, teaching personal finance to students, both traditional and non-traditional students. Then there's a common thread in all of those activities over the years.

And that is that people just don't have what they need in order to be able to retire. And they're not thinking necessarily about how to get to that end. Americans are retiring earlier, retiring later, tapping into their 401k, and doing other things that get them to a point where they think they're ready for retirement. When in fact, most people have an average net worth of $170,000 when they're ready to retire. You know how much that is to live on for 12 years? $14,400. That's not enough. And then people are going to say, "Oh, social security will add to that." Well, if you have the average return on a social security check of $1,200, that's another $14,400. So now we're at a whopping $29,000 a year to live on. That is not much. That is why he's doing this program. And there is so much to talk about, how we can help people get their mind around what it is they need to do. Give them some strategies, talk about some instruments and help them to be able to be more prepared for retirement.
