Could one speeding myth cost you your driving licence? UK motoring lawyer Jeremy Sirrell joins BrownCarGuy to explain the rules drivers often misunderstand, from speed cameras and the famous “10% plus 2 mph” belief to Section 172 notices, paperwork errors and avoiding a driving ban.

Jeremy began his legal career advising magistrates, became a Crown Prosecutor and later moved into private practice as a solicitor. Today, around half of his work concerns road traffic law, with the remainder focused on serious criminal cases. That makes him exceptionally well placed to separate motoring law from motoring folklore.

In this episode, we discuss:

• Why speeding tickets are more common than they were 20 years ago• The worst mistake to make after receiving a speeding allegation• Whether speed cameras legally have to be yellow• Whether “10% plus 2 mph” has any basis in law• Hard acceleration while remaining below the speed limit• Overtaking, emergencies and “special reasons”• When speeding evidence can genuinely be challenged• What to do when you honestly do not know who was driving• Missing paperwork, absent witnesses and prosecution time limits• Exceptional hardship and avoiding a driving ban• Whether Britain’s 70 mph motorway limit should change• The legality of inappropriate 20 mph limits• Sensible advice for performance-car drivers and petrolheads
