  • The Saw Franchise (Saw II - V)
    2026/04/17

After watching Saw last week inspired us to continue watching the rest of the franchise. This week, we focus on the next four films in the franchise and how the story of Jigsaw evolves. Before we give our thoughts, we talk about Coachella and Justine Bieber’s impactful performance, getting tickets to see sombr this fall, and a breakup in the Love is Blind universe. While we were recording, the news also broke that D4vd was arrested for the murder of teenager Celeste Rivas Hernandez back in September. On a lighter note, Hannah also watched the new Netflix film, Thrash, which combines sharks and hurricanes. As promised, we finished watching the second season of Euphoria ahead of the season three premiere. We’ll be recapping both episode one and two of the new season next week!

Some people might be adverse to the Saw franchise since it’s very graphic, but we do find some psychological depth to the films. Yes, the traps are disturbing, but we find the story of Jigsaw compelling and it elevates it compared to some other horror films. When watching multiple films back-to-back, it’s easier to see some of the flaws in the storyline. While the interactions between the victims are usually pretty good and the twists still get you, the extra backstory added to Jigsaw and the intentions behind his successor fall a bit flat. Next week, we’ll be taking a little break from the franchise, but we’ll be back later to finish up the rest of the films!

  • Shocking Plot Twists + The Drama & The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Reviews (Shutter Island, Arrival, Saw)
    2026/04/10

Shocking plot twists are the name of the game this week on the pod! We’ve already watched quite a few films with twists before this theme, but there are plenty more to explore. Before we dive into those, we discuss some new releases we saw in theaters. The Drama was a really fun watch because we saw it with a reactive audience on a Friday night. Even though the surprise was ruined for Hannah by TMZ, there were other things in this film that were unexpected. Overall, we enjoyed it and thought it brought up some interesting conversations and thoughts. Hannah also took her kids to see The Super Mario Galaxy Movie since they enjoyed the first film. Unfortunately, Hannah didn’t enjoy this and her children weren’t invested either.

Plot twists are great in films, if they’re done correctly. After this rewatch of Shutter Island, we’re still a little unsure of the execution of this one. While it does have a surprising turn of events, we don’t completely buy into how things turn out at the end. With that being said, Leonardo DiCaprio gives another wonderful performance which really takes this one to the next level. Arrival is a film that neither of us had seen, and shockingly, the twist had never been spoiled for us. The acting fell a little flat and it starts a little slowly, but things do come together in the end. This is another film that almost feels more like a thought experiment! Lastly, we watched Saw. What can we say about this iconic film? Both of us have been fans of this franchise for a long time, but it’s been a while since we’d seen the first installment. Needless to say, this film really holds up and the twist is shocking even though we know it’s coming.

  • Actors as Directors (The Lost Daughter, Is This Thing On?, The Testament of Ann Lee)
    2026/04/03

This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we’re focusing on actors who made the transition to directing. Before we dive into this week’s theme, Ailish shares her thoughts on Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, and Hannah talks about Stopmotion and Clown in a Cornfield. We also talk about some upcoming releases and our plans to see The Drama opening weekend!

There have been many actors who have dipped their toes in directing, and we tackle a few of them in this week’s episode. We started with Maggie Gyllenhaal and her directing debut with The Lost Daughter. This one felt appropriate since we recently watched The Bride!, and we had mixed feelings. The Lost Daughter has a completely different feeling compared to Gyllenhaal’s most recent endeavour, but both films felt a bit underdone to us. We actually really enjoyed Dakota Johnson in this role which isn’t something we saw often. Is This Thing On? is Bradley Cooper’s third film as a director. Each of his films have had very different vibes as well, and Is This Thing On? has the most casual/lighthearted feeling of the three. We both enjoyed this one, but we felt the separate paths of Laura Dern and Will Arnett’s characters could have been expanded on. Adding The Testament of Ann Lee by Mona Fastvold is a little bit of a stretch, but Fastvold has acted in the past. This was a film we had been waiting to see for months, so when we finally saw it on streaming, we couldn’t pass it up! After watching, it’s clear the calls for an Oscar snub are warranted.
