- Gary recorded his first entry before the marina was out of sight, noting fuel level, wind direction and time.
- On approximately October 3, the forestay failed, the mast went over port, and the boom struck his left shoulder, rendering his left arm largely unusable.
- After the fall, Gary used bolt cutters from the starboard lazarette to free rigging one-handed and ran the engine for 22 hours until it stopped.
- He transmitted on VHF channel 16 for about two hours after the mast collapse and received no response.
- Gary was found alive on October 19, wearing an inflatable vest, with his Marantz recorder still running.
