This episode sees Brendan McGrath from the NTSP interview Julie and her husband Carl. Julie needed a tracheostomy to help her recover after a complication following elective surgery. We are so grateful to Julie for sharing her first-hand experiences and also to Carl for giving his take on what was happening. Listening to our patients and their families about their experience is such a powerful motivator for improving care, and Julie and Carl have helped to steer some of the NTSP work.

Allen was admitted to our hospital during the pandemic and ended up on the ICU with respiratory failure. Allen needed a tracheostomy to help his recovery and he spent a long time recovering. Allen has a lot of fascinating insights about his care from a patient's perspective and explains a lot about delirium, pain and difficulty breathing. This is essential listening for anyone involved in caring for patients with a tracheostomy.

Allen is introduced by ACCP James Lynch, an Advanced Critical Care Practitioner who works with the NTSP. We are delighted to report that Allen made a full recovery!

Guest editor Lina interviews Professor Cliff Shelton. Cliff is Professor of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at Lancaster Medical School and a consultant anaesthetist at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester. In his university role he is the director of simulation and clinical skills for the MBChB (medicine and surgery) course, co-director of the PGDip AaPOS (anaesthesia associate) course, and a researcher with interests in quality and safety, sustainable healthcare and education. Cliff is working with the NTSP to understand the needs of healthcare staff when it comes to inserting new tracheostomies on the ICU, and he is a critical element of the GIFT project (Guided Insertion for Tracheostomy).

Guest Editor Lina interviews Professor Andy Weightman. Andy is a Professor of Medical Mechatronics at the University of Manchester and has a particular interest in Rehabilitation Robotics and next generation healthcare technology. The NTSP are lucky to have Andy working with them on a number of their device development projects and Andy talks about his role in GIFT: Guidance for Insertion of Tracheostomy. GIFT is a system to help clinicians insert tracheostomies in the ICU more safely and more precisely, potentially opening up the procedure to more patients.

Caroline is also Head of Research in the School of Engineering. She is qualified as both a Psychologist and Computer Scientist and undertakes research crossing these domains. She is Research Director of the Manchester Software Sustainabilty Institute, and a keen advocate for open and reproducible science. Caroline was named in the Guardian as one of the 2022 Top 50 Women in Engineering.
