  • Tip 10: Keep calm!
    2023/03/05

Finally, make sure to use the playlist to keep up positive vibes as you drive. Your mood equals your dog’s mood – dogs can smell our moods and the scent of cortisol in our breath and sweat, which is what our body produces when it gets stressed.

I’m Anna Webb, thank you for listening to my top 10 tips to ease dogs’ travel anxieties, courtesy of Skoda UK, the official automotive partner of Crufts 2023.

  • Tip 9: Keep the temperature cool
    2023/03/05
Always keep in mind that the car also needs to feel slightly cool to a human to be comfortable and safe for a dog. A dog’s body temperature is two degrees higher than ours. So keep a window slightly open for fresh air circulation, and check that the temperature in the back seat remains under 20 degrees centigrade.

  • Tip 8: Plan journeys with your dog in mind
    2023/03/05

If things are going well,  start to plan your journeys with your dog in mind. Factor in a comfort break every two hours if you’re going to be driving for a while and plan a route that includes dog friendly services or walks.

  • Tip 7: Starting your journey
    2023/03/05
Make the first few car journeys short, just a few streets, and gradually build up the time driving with your dog. If your dog starts to appear anxious, just go back a few steps, and build up their confidence again.

  • Tip 6: Turning the engine on
    2023/03/05
Now, combine the steps…turn the engine on but remain stationary. If your dog seems happy with the engine, turn the playlist on as well, again, starting at a low volume. After 3-4 sessions (or until your dog shows no signs of distress) gradually increase the time with the engine and the playlist turned on. If so far so good, you’re both ready to get moving!

  • Tip 5: Introducing music
    2023/03/05
It's now time to add the carefully curated playlist, with the volume low at first! A dog's hearing can be four times more sensitive than ours. Make sure not to turn on the engine yet! And busy yourself, so you are not unwittingly rewarding any anxious behaviours with too much eye contact, speech, or by displaying any frustration yourself. Keep practice sessions short, from 10-15 minutes.

  • Tip 4: Build their time in the car
    2023/03/05
Once they are in the car, let your pet settle in for a little while, before turning the engine on. So long as your dog remains calm and isn’t exhibiting signs of stress, gradually build the time together in the car over a few days until you both feel confident.

  • Tip 3: Transferring to the car
    2023/03/05

Once your pooch is happy in their pet carrier, or wearing a seat belt harness, and there’s no signs of stress, you’re ready to transfer to the car! Depending on the height of your car, your dog might need a ramp to get in and out to minimise pressure on their joints. For smaller dogs, gently pick them up and secure on the back seat. The end goal is to make sure your dog has a positive, comfortable experience entering the car.
