The New York Yankees made a strategic bullpen move this week by re-signing right-handed pitcher Geoff Hartlieb. After being designated for assignment and briefly entering free agency, Hartlieb returned to the Bronx and was quickly added to the active roster. His presence offered immediate relief during the weekend series against the Mets, as the team navigates a growing list of pitching setbacks.

Hartlieb’s return comes in response to the injury of starter Clarke Schmidt, who exited his outing against the Blue Jays with forearm tightness. Subsequent evaluations revealed damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, and manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Tommy John surgery is likely inevitable.

Schmidt’s absence leaves a significant gap in the rotation, prompting the Yankees to explore depth options both internally and externally. To accommodate Hartlieb, the Yankees optioned pitcher Javien Sandridge. Sandridge was sent back to the Triple A leagues. Sandridge had recently made his MLB debut but will now serve as reserve depth. Their performances have sparked one of the most compelling MVP races in recent memory. Despite the Yankees’ recent struggles, Judge’s production remains elite.
