More than one billion plastic nurdles have spilled into the River Tyne, and they’re still washing up along the North East coastline.

In this episode of The Letterbox Podcast, Sophie, a PhD student from Newcastle with a passion for ornithology and conservation, writes To the Nurdle.

Inspired by the ongoing River Tyne plastic pellet spill, this letter explores the devastating impact of plastic pollution on our beaches, seabirds and marine life, while celebrating the thousands of volunteers giving their time to protect the coastline.

It’s a reminder that even when a problem feels impossibly big, collective action can make a difference.

If you care about wildlife, conservation, the environment, climate action or the North East coast, this is a story you’ll want to hear.

Thank you to Sophie for sharing this and for all her work she is doing on the beach, right now alongside so many other volunteers! Follow Sophie and her work: @sophies_wild_world.
