" We have forgotten the age-old fact that God speaks chiefly through dreams and visions " - Carl Gustav JungTip O The Iceberg - is a grassroots international podcast investigating the value of dreams from the public's perspective.Season 3: Episode 3: Beautiful Dreamer In this episode guest Rodney Jones from New York, N.Y. discusses a broad spectrum of dream experiences with host Michael P O'Hara and how his dreams have enhanced his life and led him on incredible journeys through this lifetime. Rodney Jones - is a revolutionary force in modern jazz guitar. Born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1956, Jones has spent more than five decades reshaping the language of jazz guitar with a sound that fuses blues, soul, and modern harmony into a singular, deeply spiritual voice. From a childhood dream of a serene mountain plateau to performing alongside music legends, Jones has journeyed through life guided by spiritual exploration and musical expression. Raised in a family of educators and theologians, Jones grew up in a home where ideas and music were equally revered. He picked up the guitar at age six and later as a young preteen quickly immersed himself in the sounds of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, and the deep blues traditions that would become the emotional core of his playing. As a teenager, he cut his teeth in New York City soul bands and late night jam sessions, while quietly absorbing the revolutionary harmonic world of John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner. Those influences led him toward an advanced, quartal-based harmonic approach that has become one of his trademarks. Jones’s rise on the international jazz scene began with early work alongside pianist Jaki Byard and drummer Chico Hamilton before a pivotal three-year tenure in Dizzy Gillespie’s quartet in the late 1970s. That association launched him onto the world stage and opened the door to collaborations with a remarkable roster of artists, including Lena Horne, Maceo Parker, Ruth Brown, Jimmy McGriff, James Brown, Quincy Jones, Christian McBride, Stevie Wonder, Elvin Jones, Kenny Burrell, Stan Getz, and many others.Equally celebrated as an educator, Jones has served as professor of Jazz Guitar Studies at The Juilliard School and The Manhattan School of Music in New York City for more than two decades, mentoring generations of leading players. Rodney is a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow wining the prestigious award for composition. His teaching legacy extends globally through masterclasses, his Jazz Guitar Scholars program, and instructional works such as Hip Guitar Lines (Mel Bay) & 58Lines (Mel Bay).
