Sadhu Sundar Singh was one of the most remarkable spiritual figures of the early 20th century, a barefoot Indian sadhu who walked across the Himalayas preaching the love of Christ. When villagers seized him and cast him into a well of the dead, his life ebbed away until, by every human measure, he was gone. And in that pit of death, he testified, the presence of Christ came to him, and he was lifted out, rescued by an angel, and returned to life.
This episode tells his astonishing story. Sundar Singh spent a lifetime speaking about the spiritual world with a familiarity that amazed everyone who met him. He said that at death the soul leaves the body like a man leaving a house, and he described visions of heaven, a realm of radiant light, glorious landscapes, and beings of joy, where the redeemed grow in knowledge and love forever. He also described the reality of hell, which he understood as the natural condition of a soul that has shut itself off from God's love. He reported speaking with the departed, receiving instruction from Christ, and seeing the spiritual world interwoven with our own.
The experiences made him utterly fearless. He gave away everything, dressed in the simple saffron robe of a sadhu, and walked barefoot across India and Tibet for nearly thirty years. His books were translated into dozens of languages. In 1929, at age 39, he disappeared into the Himalayas, and his followers believed he had finally entered the world he described so often. Hear the testimony of the man who died in a well of corpses and came back with a message of heaven.
