Partnair Flight 394 ended in disaster in 1989 when the aircraft broke apart over the North Sea, killing all 55 people on board. Early speculation pointed toward sabotage or even a midair collision, but the investigation ultimately revealed a far more complex mechanical failure.
The breakup was caused by destructive resonance and harmonic vibrations that developed during flight, amplified by structural weaknesses in the aircraft. At the center of the issue were counterfeit bolts that failed to meet aviation safety standards, along with an improperly mounted auxiliary power unit that further destabilized the aircraft.
