A sealed beeswax jar sat upright on a limestone shelf at the bottom of Briar Well, containing a Victorian portrait and a note that read, "She did not go willingly." Who placed that jar, why choose the well as a confession, and what does a falsified death certificate tell us about a century-old disappearance?
In this episode, we follow the discovery at Pickett Creek and the records it unearthed, tracing how a town's files, a probate document, and a single jar reopened a case the community had long treated as settled. Can old paperwork and a hidden message finally answer what happened to Jessica Petersen?
Person: Jessica Petersen
Date: November 15, 1900
Location: Briar Well, Pickett Creek, Dellford, Missouri
Status: Body recovered; probate certified as natural causes
Investigator: Sharon Green
- The jar was found upright on a limestone shelf inside Briar Well on November 14, 2011, about fifteen feet from Pickett Creek.
- The sealed lid was beeswax consistent with craft supplies from the early 2010s and contained a formal Victorian portrait and a handwritten note reading "She did not go willingly."
- The portrait was identified as Jessica Petersen using an 1896 First Lutheran Church directory group photograph with handwritten captions.
- Jessica Petersen's probate filing dated November 1900 lists cause of death as natural causes and bears a physician's signature line signed by Carl Doerr, who was not a physician.
- Carl Doerr also signed the probate filing as estate administrator, resulting in his name appearing in both the physician certification and the administrator role.
