In this episode of This Is My Syncopated Life, Dr. Charles digs into what happens when disrespect becomes something deeper: degradation. Through Black Feminist Thought, personal experience, history, healthcare, leadership, and institutional power, she examines how Black women can be dismissed, discredited, talked down to, and then judged for the anger that follows.
This conversation challenges the habit of studying the Black woman’s reaction while ignoring the conditions that produced it. From epistemic authority and human dignity to ethical non-acquiescence, Dr. Charles asks the harder questions: Who gets to define what happened? Who gets believed? Where does legitimate authority end? And what happens when a Black woman says, “I respect your authority, but I do not surrender mine”?
