A moonlit field in occupied France. The hedges are dark, the ground uneven, and the landing area is marked not by runway lights but by a handful of torches held in silence. Out of the night comes an aircraft that looks old-fashioned even for its own time, and it's about to prove itself in a role nobody designed it for.

This episode matters because the Westland Lysander was built for one kind of war and found its real purpose in another entirely. Designed for army co-operation and battlefield observation, it was exposed and badly mauled over France in 1940. Yet the very features that made it vulnerable in daylight combat made it indispensable to the secret war, flying agents and supplies into occupied Europe by night.

In this episode:

  • Why the Lysander was designed the way it was, and how its short-field, slow-speed handling reflected inter-war assumptions about the battlefield
  • What happened when those assumptions collided with the German offensive of May 1940
  • Why the RAF pulled the Lysander from front-line army co-operation and moved it to lower-risk work
  • How the Special Operations Executive found a use for exactly the qualities that had made it vulnerable
  • The dangerous, precise reality of clandestine landings by torchlight in occupied France
  • How one surviving airframe, now at the RAF Museum, moved through several different wartime roles
