Ina begins the conversation by sharing her frequent visits to Police Point Park, emphasizing that many locals are unaware of its existence and the educational programs available. Mhairi, our guest and the Assistant Chief Interpreter, agrees, noting that many residents discover the park for the first time even after living in Medicine Hat for decades.

Police Point Park has intriguing historical roots, originating as an outpost for the Northwest Mounted Police in the 1880s. Mhairi explains how the area served as a barracks for the police, with its location chosen to oversee the construction of the railroad and maintain order in the growing community. "The Northwest Mounted Police were the police force really for Canada... where they grazed their horses and did rifle practice." This historical backdrop adds a layer of depth to the park, making a visit not just a nature outing but a journey through time.

The park spans an impressive 240 acres and offers approximately 10 kilometres of trails, accommodating various visitors, including those with mobility challenges. The main trail is well-maintained and accessible for wheelchairs, strollers, and even skateboards. Mhairi highlights the importance of accessibility, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the park's offerings.

Visitors to Police Point Park can also engage in fishing, particularly for sturgeon, an ancient species that calls the river home. Mhairi shares her observations of the growing fishing community within the park, noting how families and young anglers are increasingly drawn to this activity. "There is an actual fishing club in town... we see a lot of young people coming into the park to fish which is great."

The conversation circles back to the cottonwood trees in Police Point Park, some of which are estimated to be between 200 to 300 years old. Mhairi marvels at their size and age, emphasizing the uniqueness of having such ancient trees within the city limits.
