After German reunification, former citizens of East Germany gained the right to request the secret files once kept on them by the Ministry for State Security, commonly known as the Stasi. Inside gray folders, many found years of intimate reports: private jokes, dinner conversations, church meetings, travel hopes, arguments, friendships, and suspicions. Some learned that the state’s most effective surveillance device had been a coworker, neighbor, pastor, lover, spouse, or friend using a code name. This episode reconstructs how the Stasi became the shield and sword of the Socialist Unity Party, how it monitored East German society through employees, informants, opened mail, tapped phones, hidden microphones, covert searches, odor samples, psychological disruption, and political detention, and how citizens stopped the destruction of the records as the dictatorship collapsed in nineteen eighty-nine and nineteen ninety. The evidence comes from the surviving Stasi archive, official procedures, prison testimony, records of the Peaceful Revolution, post-reunification law, and historical research. The central question is not whether the Stasi watched every citizen at every moment. It did not. The deeper question is what happens when a government makes private trust politically dangerous.
