Episode 1: The Start of WW1
A newspaper clipping mailed to Belgrade. A wrong turn by a chauffeur. A bloke stepping out of a delicatessen for lunch. That's how you get nineteen million dead and four empires wiped off the map.
This episode's about how a single act of political violence in Sarajevo — one that by all rights should've stayed a regional squabble — dragged the entire industrialised world into war within six weeks. Alliances, treaties, national pride and sheer bad luck all collided at exactly the wrong moment, and none of the men pulling the levers seemed to grasp what they were actually setting in motion.
We start where it all begins: with Franz Ferdinand, Gavrilo Princip, and a number plate that some reckon predicted the exact date the whole thing would end.
