In The Odyssey, Book 12, Odysseus’ ship reaches the island of the Sirens as the wind dies and the sea grows unnaturally calm. Following Circe’s command, the crew lowers the sails, takes up the oars, and seals their ears with wax. Odysseus alone is bound upright to the mast. As the ship draws near, the Sirens raise their voices, calling Odysseus by name and promising wisdom: they claim knowledge of all that happened at Troy and all that will yet come to pass on the earth.
This moment captures the most dangerous temptation of the voyage — not destruction by force, but by the lure of total understanding.
