The Second Stamp: How a Church Lockbox Exposed a Killer's Perfect Plan

A discarded passport and a cream wool scarf in a church lockbox set off an unraveling that exposed a smuggler’s scheme and a staged disappearance. Two identical border entry stamps for the same traveler on the same date turned an ordinary transit into a deadly paradox-what happened at Cordero Pass that made the paperwork lie and Jean Patterson never return?

In this episode, we follow the discovery at a Harwick church lockbox through the police work that followed, tracing Jean Patterson’s routine border runs, her private notes on freight discrepancies, and the men who moved through Cordero Pass that day to ask: who engineered those duplicate stamps, and why did it cost Jean her life?

Person: Jean Patterson
Date: February 8, 1943
Location: Cordero Pass
Person: James Owens
Person: Beverly Whitley

- At 7:15 AM on a February morning in 1943 a church treasurer opened a donation lockbox and found a government-issued passport and a cream wool scarf.
- Jean Patterson, age 23, had made the run to Cordero Pass at least a dozen times and was processed at 9:04 AM the same day.
- Inside Patterson’s passport Special Agent Jason Gray found two entry stamps for the same crossing, same traveler, same date with no corresponding border log entries.
- James Owens, age 31, was later shown by subpoenaed financial records to have bribed port officials to undercount restricted shipments.
- A man in a telephone lineman’s uniform entered the port director’s building at approximately 1:15 PM on February 8 and signed the visitor log after a 25-minute visit.
