- At 7:15 AM on a February morning in 1943 a church treasurer opened a donation lockbox and found a government-issued passport and a cream wool scarf.
- Jean Patterson, age 23, had made the run to Cordero Pass at least a dozen times and was processed at 9:04 AM the same day.
- Inside Patterson’s passport Special Agent Jason Gray found two entry stamps for the same crossing, same traveler, same date with no corresponding border log entries.
- James Owens, age 31, was later shown by subpoenaed financial records to have bribed port officials to undercount restricted shipments.
- A man in a telephone lineman’s uniform entered the port director’s building at approximately 1:15 PM on February 8 and signed the visitor log after a 25-minute visit.
