  • MM - Washington Biologist and Muley Huntin' Fool Chad Eidson
    2021/01/04

Welcome back to Muley Monday and Happy New Year!

To ring in 2021, we dive back into some biologist talk for you mule deer huntin’ fools. We did this last year going through various Western States with mule deer opportunity, including Wyoming, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, and Montana. This year I’m hoping to finish up the series with the rest of the western states with great mule deer hunting opportunity. I hope you get two things out of these podcasts. First, we hope you find valuable information to make yourself a more efficient mule deer killer. Secondly, we hope you get involved in mule deer management so we can keep hunting these grey ghosts well into the future.

On today’s show, I talk with Chad Eidson, a wildlife area biologist based in central-eastern Washington. He helps manage an area that includes one of the most well-known trophy areas in the state, as well as some general hunting opportunity. Chad’s enthusiasm as a mule deer hunter himself comes through clearly in this episode as we talk about all things related to Washington deer hunting opportunities, 3-point restrictions, and more. Plus, I made sure to ask the famous question, “what should a hunter ask a biologist to be more successful?”

    Enjoy the show!

  • EP 486: Kurt Racicot and Lyle Hebel Talk Big Mountain Hunting
    2021/01/01

Today I am joined by Kurt Raciot the founder of Stone Glacier and Lyle Hebel head of marketing. Kurt has been solo hunting big mountains and particularly sheep for most of his hunting carrier. I love the way Kurt approaches the mountains and hunting in general. Kurt is what you might call a minimalist. In fact Stone Glacier was truly founded on redefining ultralight hunting mainly because Kurt was a solo hunter who needed the ability to come out in one load with a sheep and all of his gear.

in my opinion Kurt is just one of those people who looks at the world differently. He has the ability to look at a problem and ask how would I solve this in my own way. From hunting to gear design this has served him well over the years.

In this podcast we talk about hunting big mountains, extended trips, relying on yourself and even dive into some design flows. Lyle just got back from an epic trip to Alaska where he was able to take a Dall Ram as well as great Mountain Goat on the same trip.

  • EP 485: Bearded Butchers go on a Montana Adventure
    2020/12/24

Almost a year ago I ended up sitting with Seth and Scott Perkins at an event we were both at. Honestly I had know idea who they were but we hit it off like we were old friends from years back. Seth, Scott and I stayed in touch and actually talked often. On a whim I told them they should think about coming is Montana for an elk hunt some day. Ironically at our first meeting I spent most of the time convincing them that going on an elk was not a huge deal and anyone can do it. Boy would I grow to eat my words on that one. As fate would have it they drew tags their first year and the adventure planning would begin. Seth and Scott brought their nephew and camera man Spencer out to document the whole adventure and as of today the first half of that adventure is out on their YouTube Channel. with the second half coming out this weekend.

Hunting has been such a huge piece of my life and I can honestly say I have had some amazing experiences and met some truly amazing people along the way. I would consider these guys as close of friends as anyone and am thankful for such a great experience with them.

If you have never heard of the Bearded Butchers you have to check out their YouTube Channel. Never in a million years would I think I could get sucked into a video of someone cutting up a beef but something about the whole thing sucks you in and you wont regret it. Awesome dudes and truly consider them good friends.

Today’s podcast sponsored by Maven Optics. I love my Maven’s they are awesome glass. In fact I have been running maven for going on 5 years now. If you want to check out more about what optics I run check out a recent article I did for the Maven Journal where I talk about my collection of optics and which ones I like for different situations.

Holidays are just around the corner and a set of Maven bino’s or rifle scope should definitely be on your list. In fact go give the custom optics builder on their website a spin. There you can customize your optics with hundreds of options and I believe through the end of the month you can get free custom upgrades. Again go check out the article and feel free to shoot many any questions you have about certain optics. I am more than happy to help you choose the right option.

Today’s podcast brought to you by the great folks over at On X Maps. The #1 GPS hunting app with onX Hunt and onX Offroad. They have you covered for all the activities. On X recently launched 3D maps which is an amazing feature that basically brings google earth into the app allowing you to not only see the terrain in 3D but also be able to easily see all of your way points as well. I love this new feature and saves quite a bit of time when e-scouting or when in the field.

An On X membership makes a great gift or a stocking stuffer so head over to OnXmaps.com and get your loved one the number 1 GPS app. Or if you are really nice just share your best way points with them to help get them started. If anybody is wondering what to get me ill take way points to 400 inch bulls and 200 inches bucks. Use Code TRO to save 20% off

  • MM: Hunting Mule Deer in the Southwest with Jordan Staley
    2020/12/21

Welcome to another episode of Muley Monday! On this one, Jaden takes the mule deer hunting conversation to the Southwest where friend and lifetime deer hunter, Jordan Staley spends his time chasing bucks. Between New Mexico and Arizona, both states have solid opportunities for those wanting to go on an adventure and Jordan does a great job of hashing out what those opportunities look like. If you're a bowhunter, the January season dates in both states are a great way to break out of the snowier parts of the country and chase rutting bucks when no other seasons are around.

  • Wapiti Wednesday - Heath Hansen
    2020/12/16

Welcome to another kickass elk podcast. This podcast got me ready for summer scouting to be here. This week I sit down with Heath Hansen who is one of those under the radar guys that I love to talk to so much. Heath and his wife have been able to take some giants over the years. Don't let him fool you though, they definitely put in the work. Also I love that his wife Shawni is the more picky one of the too and also spent the first half of season hunting big bulls solo while Heath was in Alaska.

In this podcast we talk sage country bulls, which both fascinates me and frustrates me at the same time. while most think of breaks type country as mule deer habitat there are some guys finding bulls among the sage brush that are nothing short of amazing. If you like big bulls and thinking outside the box you'll LOVE this podcast.

    2020/12/15

Another entrepreneur podcast for you guys today. Full disclosure this one may go a bit deep for some still thinking about starting a company however it may give you a peep into the struggles and hurdles I deal with in my own company. Travis Chambers is a rockstar in the marketing world. Travis was a part of the most viral video of all time and then took his skills out on his own to create a media company that has helped brands do $300+ million in trackable sales. Chamber Media, Travis' company has mastered scalable video marketing through paid advertising.

In this podcast we cover the understanding of video marketing, we also dive into why comedy works and how to scale your marketing. We talk about Facebook ads and how small business should think about using that medium. Many small business know that they need to use Facebook ads but do not fully understand what that means or how to implement an actionable plan.

In this podcast we also cover something really close to home for me, understanding your avatar. At Backcountry Fuel we have struggled to market well to both hunters while not alienating the more outdoor rec community or vise versa. Logan has gotten access and or still has access to about 60,000 acres in Montana, but that is not the real story. Getting permission is a lot like getting success in life. In this podcast Logan shares his philosophy of life and relationships being a like debit card. "You can't withdraw anything before you deposit something into it.

Logan also gets after it hunting something not many talk about, big Montana Whitetails. Last year Logan smacked a giant 171" buck, only to top it this year with another 174" typical. • MM Jake Downs on Bow Hunting Bucks in the Snow
    2020/12/07

There are only a couple of places left in the Rocky Mountain west where you have the chance to hunt muley bucks and most are archery hunts. That’s why I gave Jake Downs from Nebraska a call to talk about how he approaches late season archery hunting deer. He’s a dang good trad bow hunter who is consistently successful, and I believe his approach will help you be a better archery hunter this time of year.

We also talk a little about redneck innovation, getting private ground access, and hunting cats along the way. This one has all the characteristics of a classic good BS session with helpful tips along the way.
