Let me start by saying that I never really had family meetings when growing up, which gives them that much more meaning. I’ve found that family meetings are necessary given all of the stimuli and distractions we face daily. So why are they so important? Mainly because of two things: they give everyone a chance to express themselves, but they also provide consistency and family solidarity.

This conversation will also explain the different kinds of meetings you can provide your children depending on the stage they are in and give you tips on how to make them happen!

When your child is a baby, we’re learning on our own how to be parents. Even if we have friends and family members who taught us how to do certain things when we start parenting, it’s different for each and every one of us, and we’re learning about our child in that process.

We must remember that our children are learning how to be our children, and at the same time are learning how to be in this world. So take it easy on yourself and on them. Adjusting to their needs, preferences, ages, and life stages helps us grow and change with them.

Today’s tip: Jot down 2 things that you learned this week about each of your children.

In today’s episode, we will be speaking about how our actions as parents directly influence our children. How we act now impacts how they grow. As parents we may not realize the amount of impact we have on our kids and that our influence may flow to the neighborhood and school friends.

Some time ago someone asked my children how they handled conflict at school. Their response was, “we handle it the same as mom does at home,” which is: 

1. Facing the problem
2. Asking questions
3. Talking it through. 

We have no idea how much our words and actions can affect them. We must realize that our influence matters and that no one else can teach them how we want them to be; learning can only come from ourselves.

Today’s tip:  Choose one behavior that you would like to change with your child. Now write down 3 ways you plan to change it in yourself first. Then act on it!
