The Relational Secret Sauce: We are better together with Brian & Emily Jones

Most couples think they have a communication problem. Usually, they have a needs problem — buried under everything that piles up faster than anyone can name it.

We're Brian and Emily. He's a licensed therapist and the creator of the FERNS Method™; she's a relational coach. We're also married — which means we're not talking about this work from the outside.

Every week we sit down and talk honestly about what actually happens between two people: the fights that were never about the thing they were about, the stories we quietly build about each other, and what it takes to stay on the same side. Sometimes we bring in other couples and ask them the question we're always asking — what's your secret sauce? — because the couples who make it work are usually running the method without ever having heard of it.

No hot takes. No red flags. No gender wars. Just two people who chose each other, talking with people who chose each other, about how the choosing actually works.

  • "I Could Never Work With My Husband" — What People Really Mean When They Say They Need Independence
    2026/07/16

Everyone asks us the same question: how do you two work together, build a business together, live together — and stay married?

In our very first episode, we start there. But it takes us somewhere we didn't expect.

Because underneath "I could never work with my partner" is a word we hear constantly, in our practice and in our friendships: independence. And when you press on it, most people can't say what they actually mean by it.

We get into the difference between having your own thing and being unable to admit you depend on anyone. Why so many couples try to build something together while still thinking with an "HR mind." And then the part that surprised us both — the way we've all learned to turn people off. Mute the group chat. Delete the app. Take a break from the friend. It's efficient. It's normal. And it doesn't stay in the group chat — eventually it comes home, and we start turning off our spouses, our kids, our marriages.

We also get honest about needs — why expecting your partner to read your mind isn't a need, it's a demand — and Brian names his own out loud for the first time on air.

And we land on the phrase that's probably going to define this whole show: imperfectly synchronizing. We're going to mess up. Both of us. Sometimes badly. The point was never to get it right. The point is that the grounding stays in the we.

    In this episode:
(01:12) The question we get from everyone: how do you work together?
(02:42) The "HR mind" — why couples try to run a business that doesn't exist yet
(03:34) Independence, roles, and who takes out the trash
(05:10) What do people actually mean by independence?
(10:36) Protection of the self vs. protection of the relationship
(12:21) You can't want community and want to be left alone
(13:12) Turning people off: the mute button, the deleted app, the friend you stopped answering
(16:43) 300 friends and no one to call
(17:30) When relationships become disposable — and the stories we build to justify it
(21:01) Needs aren't mind-reading: what you have to say out loud
(22:16) Brian names his own needs: competence and significance
(24:26) Imperfectly synchronizing — and why the grounding stays in the "we"
