A pilot does not calculate a mid-air collision. He reads it. The horizon sits at your eye height, so an aircraft above it is higher than you and one below it is lower. The target that demands everything is different: the one holding a constant line of sight, fixed in your canopy while it grows. No relative motion, closing range. The optics specify it, no math required. Cognitive systems engineer John Flach returns to No Way Out and pulls that thread from James Gibson and Stick and Rudder all the way to how leaders decide on Wall Street and in elite sport.

The information is already out there. In the cockpit the environment hands it to you as optic flow. In business it is real but poorly specified, so the leader's job is to build the optical flow field that does not exist yet. That is ecological interface design, and it is also what a coach does when a drill lets a player see what took experts ten years to notice.
