There was no great set-piece battle, no line of infantry advancing behind artillery fire, no famous charge. Instead, there were aircraft circling over the hills of Waziristan, returning again and again over the course of weeks, dropping warning leaflets, then bombs, then machine-gun fire, day after day.

This episode matters because Pink's War, fought in 1925 on India's North-West Frontier, was the first military campaign the RAF ever carried out entirely on its own, without the Army or Royal Navy taking the lead. It became a test case for whether air power could deliver imperial control by itself, and helped the young service argue for its own independent future.
