Carl Gustav Jung was the founder of analytical psychology and one of the most influential thinkers in modern history. In early 1944, at age 68, he suffered a heart attack that brought him to the brink of death for weeks. In that state, Jung later wrote, he had an experience so vivid and objective that he knew it was not a dream. It was, he insisted, the most real thing that ever happened to him.
In this episode, we explore Jung's account from his autobiography Memories, Dreams, Reflections. He found himself floating high above the earth, looking down at the planet bathed in glorious blue light, with India, Ceylon, and the Himalayas visible below. He was free of every weight, at peace beyond description. He approached a dark rock that was a temple, and inside he saw his own doctor in his eternal, primal form, along with a black Hindu sitting in silent stillness. Jung felt his whole life being laid before him and understood that he was on the verge of the ultimate revelation, the answer to everything. Then his doctor's image moved toward him, and he knew he was being called back. He returned to his body furious at having to leave.
The experience stripped Jung of his fear of death and reshaped his understanding of consciousness, the unconscious, and what lies beyond the grave. He remained convinced until his final days that what he saw was objective reality.
