I’ve heard it said that questioning is okay but doubting is wrong, but I think doubting is okay too. God doesn’t seem to mind when we doubt. In fact, doubt can be an opening for God to come closer and show us God’s love and care; it can be a means to transformation.

Darkness and light are neither good nor bad; they’re both parts of the whole. We can’t consider suffering apart from resurrection, and we can only enter into resurrection joy while bearing the experience of suffering. Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death and resurrection? Christ is with us in darkness and light.

Maybe we, too, need to move through this time of disintegration. As things unravel and one struggle after another emerges, it can feel disconcerting and frightening. But that doesn’t mean God has abandoned us. We are living into this story, the beauty and the heartbreak and the love and betrayal. Jesus’s story is our story too.

Not only does transformation always come, whether I want it to or not, but God’s love is in that movement, whether I see it or not. And God invites me to see it. “See, I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?”

Welcome to a special episode of the Providence Podcast. Instead of our usual Scripture reflection, we’ll be doing an interview about engagement, service, and working with nonprofits. I know there are a lot of people who want to get involved with making the world a better place, and Godknows we need that! So we’ll be talking about that today – some of the gifts of volunteering and how to follow a call to get involved, whether that’s full time or just the little bit of time you have to give. We’ll talk about how to dealwith overwhelm and burnout, how to figure out what direction to move in, and how service can connect you with a community of other people.

This conversation is part of a larger movement called the Podcast-a-thon. The Podcast-a-thon invites podcasters to interview someone connected with a nonprofitorganization, and so that’s exactly what we’re doing! https://www.podcasthon.org/

For this conversation, I consulted an expert, and one of myown sisters, Sister Alice Gerdeman. Sr. Alice has a background education, community engagement, leadership, and peace and justice work, among other things. She’s a person of many talents, someone who has graced a lot of us with her mentoring and care. I’m sure you’ll appreciate hearing her perspective and her wisdom.
