In The Count of Monte Cristo, the portrait in Albert’s bedchamber proves far more significant than the artwork surrounding it.
Albert explains that the woman is not his mistress but his mother, the Countess de Morcerf, painted years earlier in the costume of a Catalan fisherwoman. He recounts how the portrait displeased his father, why it was moved to his own room, and how his mother still weeps whenever she looks at it. Monte Cristo listens closely, searching Albert’s words for any hidden meaning.
Albert speaks with complete sincerity, unaware of the effect the portrait has had on his guest.
